I remember sitting in my 9th grade english class learning about Greek mythology. From Zeus to Poseidon, we learned all about them. I studied so hard for those fill-in-the-blank tests and memorized all that I could. We did book reports and dressed up as the characters we read about. While it is great to know about the Greek Gods from a literature standpoint, I've begun to think that our view of God might have been affected in the process. The prideful Greek Gods were cruel to the people... they punished them, embarrassed them, and never cared for them. They were too selfish to care for anything other than their own power, wealth, and self. They were indifferent.
But that's not our God. What a surprising way to describe God... A God who pursues us. He is on a quest to follow His Children until His children follow Him. Our God isn't hard to find. He seeks out the far off to redeem their heart.
He is NOTHING like the Gods we learned about in English class. NOTHING.
