I have pursued purity (in all forms) for most of my adult life, and I tell (so many times) the high school and middle school girls I get to know to remain pure in body, heart, and mind. It has not been easy at times and it would be much easier to go down a different path along with the majority of people. I was thinking today, though, why exactly is purity such a big deal? Why does it make me want to cry when I hear stories of girls being careless with their purity? Why does this word stir my heart so much?
And I realized that purity is not just something physical we abstain from, it has to do with seeing God. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God." George Whitefield said, "He who is most pure in heart, shall hereafter enjoy the clearest vision of God." Those who give themselves away outside of marriage forfeit a depth of pleasure that only those know who wait for the Lord. Our sight of God in the present is clouded by all impurity.
So why is it a big deal? Because it has to do with seeing God. And in seeing God, we are living the way we were created to live.
