I love to read, and lately, people have been asking me what book should they read next? So I have compiled a summer reading list. If you want a good read, these are great choices and some of my personal favorites.
This book was given to me when I first moved to Atlanta, and I spent many nights reading it until the late hours of the morning. "The Swam House" is set in Atlanta and tells the history of the city in the 1960s through the eyes of a wealthly little girl. This book has such southern grace and character and is one of the reasons I feel in love with Atlanta and all that it has to offer.
"What is the What" is the book I am currently reading. I purchased it at the little bookstore in Seaside as a beach read, and I have loved it. The man in the story has suffered many unbearable things through the Sudan Holocaust and paints the tale of his survival with such vivid pictures. It is amazing to see how a small elementary-aged boy can survive in a country filled with war and child soldiers.
This might be one of my favorite books. Not only do I love that it is placed in the deep South, but I love the story of God bringing to unlikely men together to be the best of friends. This book is the clearest example of God's grace, His wonderful and crazy plan for us, and His unconditional love for not only the rich, but poor.
I read this book when I was in Uganda. Not only could I smell the smells of Africa when I was reading it, but I could understand more of her culture and life through the people I met. This book paints an amazing story of rescue, perseverance, and most importantly, forgiveness.
Brennan Manning's new book... I am currently reading this, and I am challenged by His ideas and thoughts on God's longing for His people and our reposnse to His call.
I have never read a book quite like "Crazy Love" because I was challenged in a way I had never been challenged before. The book talks about the Lord's love for us, and how our response is anything but a radical "crazy love" for Him.
I read these books (3 in the series) a few years ago, and I could not put them down. Yes, this is Christian-fiction, but no, it is not cheesy. This book is set in Rome during the Coliseum days.
Another Christian-fiction book based on a man who lives on Lake Burton. Again this book is not a cheesy christian tale, but it is a story of healing and redemption of a hurting man through the tender pursuit of a child.
"A Tale of Three Kings" was given to me to read when I was on work crew at JH Ranch in the summer of 2003. I still cannot stop thinking about the book because it challenges the reader to desire character and integrity at any cost. The book is the story of David told through an adventurous narrative and is told like no other King David tales you have heard before.
This might be one of my all time favorite books. Not only do I think people should be informed about things that are going on in Afghanistan, but I also think we are to have hearts for the people that are there. This book changed my outlook on the Middle East through the story of two boys and turned my heart toward the people who are suffering there.
Enjoy!
